FPCCI chief urges developed nations to pay climate debt, support vulnerable economies
LAHORE, Oct 18 (APP):Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Regional Committee on Food Convener Shahid Imran on Sunday urged developed countries to pay their climate debt and fulfill their responsibilities towards developing nations facing the growing impacts of climate change.
According to a spokesperson, speaking at a seminar on “Climate Impact on Food and Agriculture”, organized by Family Food Group of Industries, Shahid Imran said the devastating floods of 2022 caused an estimated $30 billion in losses to Pakistan, while the human cost of the disaster was immeasurable.
He said climate change had worsened food insecurity and continued to threaten agricultural production and livelihoods. Developing countries, despite contributing relatively little to historical greenhouse gas emissions, were facing severe consequences, including floods, droughts, rising temperatures and declining agricultural productivity.
Shahid Imran said the transition to a low-carbon economy was a necessity rather than a luxury or choice. He stressed that climate justice, equity and historical responsibility for global warming must guide international climate policies.
He urged developed countries to provide adequate climate finance, transfer technology and help vulnerable economies strengthen their resilience to climate-related disasters. He said financial assistance should be accessible, predictable and aligned with the actual needs of developing countries.
He further stressed that climate policies must protect farmers, workers, small businesses and vulnerable communities from adverse economic impacts.
He said Pakistan needed stronger international cooperation, investment in climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable food systems to protect livelihoods, improve food security and ensure long-term economic stability.
