Health experts urge preventive measures against dengue
ISLAMABAD, Oct 18 (APP):Health experts have urged citizens to adopt preventive measures against dengue fever by eliminating stagnant water.
They asked for using mosquito repellents and seeking timely medical attention to protect themselves and their families from the mosquito-borne disease.
They advised people to regularly inspect their homes and surroundings for standing water, which provides breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and ensure that water containers, flowerpots, discarded tyres and other potential breeding sites are properly cleaned or covered.
The public has also been encouraged to use mosquito repellents, mosquito nets and protective screens on windows and doors to reduce exposure to mosquito bites, particularly during periods of increased mosquito activity.
Dr Saaed Naeem, a medical practitioner stressed that maintaining clean surroundings and ensuring proper waste disposal could help control mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of dengue transmission in residential areas.
He further advised citizens to wear clothing that covers the arms and legs and take additional precautions during the day, as dengue-transmitting mosquitoes are active during daylight hours, particularly in the early morning and before dusk.
Common symptoms of dengue include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea and skin rash. People experiencing such symptoms, particularly during an outbreak, should consult a qualified healthcare professional promptly, he added.
Medical expert, Dr Hemeed Khawar cautioned against self-medication, especially the use of aspirin and ibuprofen, as these medicines may increase the risk of bleeding in dengue patients. Paracetamol may be used for fever under appropriate medical guidance.
He emphasized that severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, difficulty breathing, unusual drowsiness or extreme weakness require urgent medical attention.
He called upon citizens to make dengue prevention a shared responsibility by keeping their homes and neighbourhoods clean, eliminating mosquito breeding sites and following medical advice to protect public health.
