Govt to strengthen PIMS stroke intervention, critical-care services

Govt to strengthen PIMS stroke intervention, critical-care services
ISLAMABAD, Oct 22 (APP):The government is undertaking a Rs7.22 billion project to establish specialized stroke intervention services and expand critical-care facilities at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
The project is being started with an aim to improve access to advanced treatment, strengthen emergency response and enhance healthcare delivery in the federal capital, hospital sources said.
The project, titled Establishment of Stroke Intervention and Expansion of Critical-Care Facilities at PIMS (2024–27), has a total estimated cost of Rs7,220.956 million and is designed to strengthen the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized treatment to stroke patients and people suffering from life-threatening conditions.
According to hospital sources, the initiative focuses on improving specialized stroke intervention services, expanding critical-care infrastructure and facilitating timely diagnosis and treatment for patients requiring urgent medical attention.
The project is expected to enhance the hospital’s capacity to manage complex medical emergencies by strengthening access to specialized interventions, intensive care and advanced treatment facilities.
These improvements are particularly important for patients whose conditions require immediate medical assessment and continuous monitoring.
The sources said stroke intervention was a key component of the project, as timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment could help reduce the risk of permanent disability and improve recovery prospects.
Strengthening specialized services would support medical teams in responding more effectively to stroke emergencies.
They added that expanding critical-care facilities would help improve the management of critically ill patients who require intensive monitoring, specialized medical support and prompt intervention.
The initiative is intended to strengthen the hospital’s overall capacity to respond to serious illnesses and medical emergencies.
Aligned with the Equity, Education, Health and Population pillar of the URAAN Pakistan initiative, the project reflects the government’s broader priority of strengthening public-sector healthcare institutions and improving access to advanced medical services.
Hospital sources said the project held particular significance for Islamabad, where PIMS serves as a major public-sector referral hospital for patients from the federal capital and surrounding areas.
The hospital’s specialized services are important for patients who depend on public healthcare facilities for emergency and advanced medical treatment.
They said the expansion of stroke and critical-care services would help strengthen Islamabad’s emergency healthcare infrastructure and improve the availability of specialized treatment within the public sector.
Enhanced facilities could also support healthcare professionals in managing complex cases more efficiently.
The sources further emphasized that investment in specialized medical infrastructure was essential to meeting the growing demand for emergency healthcare, reducing delays in treatment and improving patient outcomes.
The project is expected to contribute to stronger public healthcare delivery by supporting timely intervention and access to critical medical services.
