ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (APP):Pakistani-origin heart surgeon Dr Asif Hasan, who has transformed the lives of thousands of children with complex heart conditions, has received a lifetime achievement award at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards in the United Kingdom.
Dr Hasan, who retired earlier this year from Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, dedicated more than three decades to paediatric cardiac care, performing over 4,000 open-heart operations during his career, including approximately 3,000 as lead surgeon.
Appointed consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at the Freeman Hospital in 1995, he later led the hospital’s paediatric transplant programme, helping establish it as one of the world’s leading services of its kind.
His pioneering contributions to paediatric heart transplantation and mechanical heart support devices helped more children survive while awaiting donor hearts.
Beyond his surgical work, Dr Hasan trained a new generation of surgeons, many of whom now serve as consultants worldwide.
He also participated in overseas charitable surgical camps, treating children in underserved communities and supporting the development of medical facilities and surgical training programmes abroad.
For thousands of families, he is remembered not only for his surgical expertise but also for his compassion, honesty and reassuring approach during some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
His recognition highlights the contributions of a Pakistani-origin medical professional whose decades of service have made a lasting difference to children and families in the UK and beyond.
