PA speaker urges long-term water planning

PA Speaker stresses national unity, constitutional supremacy for a peaceful Pakistan
GUJRAT, Oct 28 (APP):Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has called for a comprehensive national strategy to address Pakistan’s water crisis, stressing the need to increase water storage capacity and ensure sustainable management of resources.
According to an official source, he was addressing the inaugural session of a national symposium titled Pakistan’s Water Future,Building Climate-Resilient, Sustainable and Equitable Water and Food Security at the University of Chenab, Gujrat, as chief guest.
He said water scarcity, pollution and administrative challenges required coordinated efforts. He stressed the need to control industrial waste, prevent groundwater contamination and improve urban planning.
The speaker said Pakistan needed additional reservoirs and better water management to reduce water losses during floods and tackle shortages. He warned that climate change, melting glaciers and pollution posed long-term threats to water security.
Referring to water disputes between Pakistan and India, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan urged both countries to honour their water agreements and resolve differences through dialogue and established international mechanisms. He also called for consultations to settle water-related issues between Punjab and Sindh.
Emphasising the role of education and research, he urged universities to promote water conservation and resource management. He said cooperation among government institutions, researchers and the public was essential to ensuring sustainable water and food security.
