ISLAMABAD, Oct 22 (APP):A robbery suspect was injured when his alleged accomplices opened fire on a police team in an attempt to free him from custody in the limits of Sumbal Police Station, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), police said on Thursday.
An official told APP on Thursday that the suspect, identified as Shakaz Baig, was being brought back by a police team after the recovery of a stolen motorcycle on his identification.
During the return journey, two armed men riding a motorcycle, who were allegedly hiding along the route, suddenly opened fire on the police team in an attempt to free the arrested suspect.
Police said Shakaz Baig attempted to escape during the firing but was injured by bullets allegedly fired by his accomplices.
The police team remained unharmed due to bulletproof jackets and other protective measures. The officers managed to apprehend the injured suspect a short distance away and shifted him to a hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the suspect had a previous criminal record involving more than a dozen cases of robbery, street crime and other serious offences and was wanted by Islamabad Police.
A stolen motorcycle was also recovered on his identification, while the firing caused damage to an official police vehicle.
Police said a search operation was underway to trace and arrest the two fleeing suspects.
