Pakistan eyes commercial soybean production to reduce import dependence
ISLAMABAD, Oct 29 (APP):Agricultural researchers and experts have discussed a joint strategy to promote commercial soybean production, improve seed quality and develop the soybean value chain in Pakistan to help reduce dependence on imports and strengthen the local agriculture sector.
The discussions were held during a meeting in Faisalabad attended by Chief Executive Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB) Dr. Abid Mahmood, Director General Research Punjab at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) Faisalabad Dr Sajid-ur-Rehman, representatives of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) and a team of soybean scientists.
The soybean scientists briefed the participants on future research and development plans, proposed strategies and key findings of their recent visit to Australia, said a press release.
The meeting also discussed opportunities for international cooperation, research partnerships, technology transfer and the promotion of value-added soybean products in Pakistan.
During the visit, newly established seed storage facilities at the AARI campus were inaugurated to ensure better seed preservation and support future soybean research, development and commercial activities.
The participants also visited soybean fields to review crop development and research activities.
The experts reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation among research institutions, farmers and industry to promote commercial soybean cultivation and expand business opportunities.
They emphasized that improved research, availability of quality seeds, modern storage facilities and stronger linkages between farmers and industry could help increase domestic soybean production, reduce import dependence and strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural value chain.
