SIU rejects reports circulating on social media of increase in extortion cases

SIU kills key operative of extortionist gang in encounter
KARACHI, Oct 30 (APP): The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Karachi Police has rejected reports circulating on social media and in some newspapers claiming a 100 per cent increase in extortion incidents in the city, terming them contrary to official figures.
According to a clarification issued by the SIU/CIA Karachi on Friday, the number of extortion cases investigated by the unit declined from 178 in 2025 to 136 in 2026.
The statement said that 15 alleged extortionists were killed in police encounters during 2026, compared to six in 2025. Similarly, the number of suspects arrested in injured condition following police encounters increased from 16 in 2025 to 25 in 2026.
The SIU/CIA maintained that its figures showed a decline in investigated extortion cases alongside an increase in police action against suspects allegedly involved in the crime.
It said the Unit had continued indiscriminate action against extortionist elements and that the figures contradicted claims of a rise in extortion incidents in Karachi.
