Health experts stress osteoporosis prevention

Health experts stress osteoporosis prevention
ISLAMABAD, Oct 20 (APP):Health experts on Tuesday stressed the importance of osteoporosis prevention, early diagnosis, and appropriate medication to reduce the risk of fractures and protect bone health.
On the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day, which is being observed worldwide today, they advised people to adopt healthy lifestyles, consume calcium-rich foods, ensure adequate vitamin D intake, and engage in regular physical activity to maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
“Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease as it can progress without noticeable symptoms until a fracture occurs. Early assessment, timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential to prevent complications,” Dr Malik Imran, a health expert said.
He emphasized that people at increased risk, particularly older adults, should consult healthcare professionals about bone health assessments and bone mineral density testing.
He also highlighted the importance of taking prescribed medication regularly and following medical advice, cautioning against self-medication or discontinuing treatment without consulting a doctor.
“Alongside medication, a balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate calcium and vitamin D intake play an important role in maintaining bone strength. Preventive measures should begin early and continue throughout life,” Dr Naeem Khan, a medical practitioner said.
He urged the public to take bone health seriously, seek medical advice when needed and adopt preventive measures to reduce the burden of osteoporosis and related fractures.
