‘Charming Beijing’ bridges cultures, connects communities
BEIJING, Oct 22 (APP):Bringing communities closer through the power of storytelling and cultural exchange, the “Charming Beijing” television project is offering Pakistani audiences a window into China’s rich heritage, technological progress and modern urban life, while fostering mutual understanding between the two countries as they mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
The 2026 edition of the television series premiered on Pakistan Television (PTV) on October 20, highlighting how media cooperation can transcend geographical boundaries, connect people through shared experiences and introduce audiences to the diverse cultural identities and development journeys of other nations.
Bushra Naz, the project coordinator, told APP that the series goes beyond showcasing Beijing’s landmarks and achievements, seeking to build cultural connections and bring the people of Pakistan and China closer through a deeper understanding of each other’s traditions, values and contemporary realities.
She said the programme explores the Chinese capital through four themes: “Cultural Beijing,” “Technological Beijing,” “Green Beijing” and “Dialogue with Beijing,” presenting the city’s historical legacy, cultural traditions, technological innovation and sustainable urban development through the perspective of Pakistani media professionals.
A Pakistani production team visited Beijing in mid-September at the invitation of the Information Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality to film special features highlighting the city’s cultural diversity and transformation into a modern international metropolis.
Naz said such initiatives demonstrate how television and storytelling can serve as bridges between cultures, enabling audiences to look beyond national borders, appreciate different ways of life and discover common ground between societies.
Launched in 2019 by the Information Office of the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, the overseas “Charming Beijing” television project is an international cultural exchange initiative that brings foreign media professionals to the Chinese capital to document its heritage, development and contemporary life.
Since its inception, the project has welcomed production teams from 17 countries, including Pakistan, Laos, Serbia, Italy, Brazil, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Kazakhstan and Brunei, to produce programmes introducing Beijing to international audiences.
The resulting productions have been broadcast on mainstream television channels in more than 10 countries, extending the project’s reach and creating opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue through the medium of television.
As Pakistan and China celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the 2026 series is expected to further strengthen people-to-people contacts and cultural ties, underscoring the role of media in connecting communities, celebrating cultural diversity and translating longstanding bilateral friendship into meaningful public engagemen.
