Doctors call for mandatory warning labels on packaged foods

WHO trains doctors in dengue case management
ISLAMABAD, Oct 18 (APP):Health experts have called for mandatory, evidence-based front-of-package warning labels on food products to help consumers make informed dietary choices and address Pakistan’s growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NCDs account for approximately 47.22 per cent of total deaths in Pakistan, highlighting the need for stronger preventive healthcare measures and policies promoting healthier diets.
Doctors and public health experts emphasize that clear, prominent warning labels on packaged foods can help consumers identify products containing excessive amounts of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, enabling them to make healthier choices.
They have stressed that simple and easily understandable warnings are particularly important because consumers often find it difficult to interpret complex nutritional information printed on food packaging.
Excessive consumption of sugar, salt and unhealthy fats is associated with an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic conditions, placing a growing burden on individuals, families and the healthcare system.
Health experts believe mandatory front-of-package warning labels could also encourage food manufacturers to reformulate products by reducing excessive amounts of unhealthy ingredients, contributing to a healthier food environment.
The Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination has emphasized the importance of evidence-based nutrition policies and public awareness in addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases. It supports efforts to promote healthier dietary choices and strengthen preventive healthcare measures to protect public health.
Experts have called for transparent regulations based on scientific evidence and clear nutritional criteria to ensure that front-of-package warning labels provide reliable information and help consumers compare food products more easily.
They have also stressed that such labelling measures should complement broader public health initiatives, including nutrition education, awareness campaigns and policies encouraging healthier food choices.
The experts said coordinated action by the government, healthcare professionals and relevant stakeholders was essential to reduce diet-related health risks and promote healthier lifestyles across Pakistan.
