ECP orders Islamabad local polls schedule
ISLAMABAD, Oct 21 (APP):The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday directed its office to prepare and issue the schedule for local government elections in Islamabad to fulfil the constitutional and legal requirements for holding polls in the federal capital under the Constitution, the Elections Act 2017 and the Islamabad Local Government Act 2015.
The directions were issued by a five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja during a hearing on the conduct of local government elections in Islamabad.
Federal Secretary for Interior Ahmed Raza Sarwar and Additional Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Uzair Ali Khan appeared before the bench.
In its written decision, signed by the chief election commissioner and all four members of the commission, the ECP stated that holding local government elections in Islamabad was mandatory under the Constitution and the relevant electoral and local government laws.
The bench directed the commission’s office to finalize and issue the election schedule to enable the conduct of local government polls in the federal capital in accordance with the applicable legal framework.
It also instructed the relevant authorities to take all possible measures to complete the local government election process.
