ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (APP):The University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (UAJK) on Tuesday marked Kashmir Black Day with a rally and seminar in Muzaffarabad, reaffirming solidarity with the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and calling for practical measures towards a peaceful resolution of the longstanding dispute, according to a press release received here.
The observance marked October 27, 1947, when Indian troops landed in Srinagar following the signing of the Instrument of Accession, an event regarded by Pakistanis and Kashmiris observing the day as the beginning of India’s occupation of the territory.
Organised by the Directorate of Students Affairs, the rally began at the university’s Administration Block and concluded at the Institute of Kashmir Studies (IKS). Former Chief Justice of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Justice (retd) Syed Manzoor Hussain Gillani, Vice Chancellor Prof Nasir Jamal Khattak, university officials and students participated in the rally.
The participants condemned India’s occupation, expressed solidarity with the Kashmiri people and chanted slogans in support of their freedom movement.
Addressing a seminar at the IKS, Justice Gillani highlighted the historical significance of October 27, 1947, rejecting India’s narrative of tribal interference and describing the freedom movement in Jammu and Kashmir as indigenous. He also recalled the violence in Jammu and the suffering of Muslims during the events surrounding Partition.
Emphasising the need to move beyond rhetoric, he called for concrete efforts to resolve the Kashmir dispute peacefully. He urged young people to develop a deeper understanding of its historical and political dimensions and to raise awareness about the rights and aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Vice Chancellor Prof Nasir Jamal Khattak described youth as the future of Kashmir, urging students to approach their responsibilities with confidence and a constructive outlook.
He cautioned against knee-jerk reactions and encouraged students to assess the progress made during the first quarter of the 21st century, draw lessons from past mistakes and develop a stronger understanding of themselves and their responsibilities. He also urged them to take pride in their surroundings, educational institutions and country.
During the interactive session, Justice Gillani responded to questions from participants and presented a copy of his book, Aaina-e-Kashmir, to the vice chancellor.
Earlier, IKS Director Dr Sumaira Shafique welcomed the guests. The university’s registrar, controller of examinations, director of student affairs, faculty members, and students also attended the seminar.
