Universities should balance market needs with social service, knowledge creation: VC Swat Uni
ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (APP):Vice Chancellor of the University of Swat, Professor Dr Husnul Amin on Tuesday said that the fundamental purpose of universities is to seek truth, create new knowledge and serve society, emphasizing that higher education institutions should strike a balance between market needs and societal demands.
He expressed these views while addressing the 5th International Conference on Higher Education, jointly organized by Alhamd University and the Institute of Regional Studies. His keynote address was titled “Reclaiming the Soul of the University.”
Professor Dr Husnul Amin critically examined the neoliberal university model, observing that under this model, universities have moved away from their fundamental purpose of pursuing truth, generating knowledge and serving communities and society at large.
Acknowledging the changes taking place in the higher education sector, he stressed the need for universities to adopt a balanced approach that meets market and employment requirements while preserving their core objectives of fulfilling social responsibilities, creating knowledge and serving the public.
