World Iodine Deficiency Day observed
ISLAMABAD, Oct 21 (APP):World Iodine Deficiency Day was observed in Pakistan on Wednesday, along with other parts of the world, to raise awareness about the importance of iodine for human health and promote measures for the prevention and treatment of iodine deficiency disorders.
The day aims to educate the public about the essential role of iodine in maintaining normal body functions and preventing health complications associated with its deficiency.
Health experts said iodine was an essential micronutrient required by the thyroid gland to produce hormones that regulate several vital bodily functions, including heart rate, metabolism, body temperature and muscle activity.
Health professionals urged communities to adopt preventive measures and support awareness initiatives to reduce the burden of iodine deficiency disorders and improve public health outcomes.
A medical practitioner, Dr Saeed Noman explained that iodine deficiency could lead to thyroid disorders, including goitre, and affect physical growth and brain development.
He added pregnant women and young children were particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of inadequate iodine intake.
Dr Huma Saleem, a medical expert emphasized that the use of adequately iodized salt was a simple, effective and affordable way to prevent iodine deficiency.
She advised the public to ensure adequate iodine intake through a balanced diet and the regular use of iodized salt in recommended quantities.
She stressed the importance of public awareness, early identification of iodine deficiency disorders and timely medical consultation to prevent complications.
