SARGODHA, Oct 27 (APP):The University of Sargodha marked Kashmir Black Day with a solidarity walk and a seminar, calling for the protection of the rights of the Kashmiri people and renewed international efforts to resolve the long-standing dispute in accordance with their right to self-determination.
According to a press release issued by UoS PRO office, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tasawar Hayat  led the walk and attended a seminar titled “Kashmir Dispute and Its Implications for Regional Peace”, organised by the Riaz Shad Co-curricular Forum.
A large number of students participated in both activities to express solidarity with the people of Indian-Occupied Kashmir.
Addressing the seminar, the vice chancellor said a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute is essential for lasting peace in the region. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and called on the international community to play a meaningful role in securing the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions and protecting human rights in the territory.
Dr Abrar Zahoor, chairperson of the Department of History and Pakistan Studies, said the Kashmir dispute is among the unresolved conflicts rooted in the colonial period. He noted that although the issue had been taken to the United Nations and resolutions adopted on the right of the Kashmiri people to decide their future, the promised exercise of self-determination remained unfulfilled. He also highlighted the implications of the withdrawal of Indian-Occupied Kashmir’s special status, extensive militarisation and human rights violations.
Dr. Muhammad Munir, director of the Riaz Shad Co-curricular Forum, said supporting the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and raising their concerns was a shared responsibility.
The forum also organised speech and essay-writing competitions on the theme “The Unjust Radcliffe Commission Award: The Root Cause of the Kashmir Dispute”. The vice chancellor distributed certificates and cash prizes among students who secured the first three positions.
