Shahdara Dam construction expected to begin soon, CDA says
ISLAMABAD, Oct 28 (APP):Construction of the long-awaited Shahdara Dam is expected to begin soon, with the project projected to add five to 10 million gallons per day (MGD) to Islamabad’s water supply, subject to final design and technical assessments, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) said on Wednesday.
The project is planned to be completed within two years and is aimed at augmenting the capital’s surface water resources amid rising demand, according to a CDA spokesperson.
The dam, he said will introduce an additional source of surface water into the city’s supply system, under the supervision of Islamabad Water Director General Sardar Khan Zimri, the authority said.
He said the project had been under consideration for decades and would form part of broader efforts to improve water availability and strengthen the city’s long-term water security.
Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf are overseeing efforts to expand Islamabad’s water resources, the spokesperson said.
The project’s expected contribution of five to 10 MGD remains subject to technical assessments, final design and operational arrangements.
The spokesperson said it was also working to explore additional water sources and improve the efficiency and reliability of the existing supply network.
Islamabad faces increasing pressure on its water resources as its population and demand grow. The Shahdara Dam project is expected to help address this challenge, although its eventual contribution will depend on the final project design and implementation.
