Al-Shifa hosts UK Fellowship Exams, opens global opportunities for Eye Specialists

Al-Shifa hosts UK Fellowship Exams, opens global opportunities for Eye Specialists
RAWALPINDI, Oct 10 (APP):Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi hosted the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth), United Kingdom, examinations for the third consecutive time, highlighting its growing role in international ophthalmic education and professional training.
The examinations attracted 71 candidates. Five examiners from Al-Shifa joined 15 international examiners, while candidates from other countries also participated.
Al-Shifa Trust President Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rehmat Khan said the Royal College’s decision to select the hospital for a third consecutive year reflected its confidence in the institution’s clinical facilities, academic environment and ability to host internationally recognised examinations.
He said the collaboration enabled Pakistani ophthalmologists to interact with international experts, exchange knowledge and gain exposure to global standards of professional assessment.
The partnership also allows Pakistani doctors to pursue the fellowship examinations locally, reducing the travel expenses and logistical challenges associated with appearing abroad.
Greater access to international professional qualifications can help doctors advance their careers while strengthening specialist training in Pakistan.
He informed media that the Royal College first brought its examinations to Al-Shifa in 2024 after establishing a partnership. The arrangement opened a local route for Pakistani ophthalmologists seeking the internationally recognised fellowship qualification.
The visiting examiners included Ms Sophie Donovan, acting director of examinations at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, Osama Giasin, a consultant ophthalmologist, and Muhammad Mohyudin, an examiner from the United Kingdom.
Rehmat Khan described hosting the examinations as an honour for Pakistan, saying the Royal College’s repeated selection demonstrated confidence in the country’s medical institutions. He said Al-Shifa would continue to promote international medical education and professional development through such partnerships.
Stronger specialist training can help hospitals improve the diagnosis and management of complex eye conditions. It can also benefit patients by supporting the development of local expertise and reducing dependence on treatment abroad.
Al-Shifa Trust plans to continue collaborating with the Royal College and other international academic institutions to expand professional training, encourage knowledge exchange and strengthen eye care services in Pakistan.
