Mental health as important as physical health, says psychiatrist on Mental Health Day
LAHORE, Oct 09 (APP):Prominent psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Aftab Asif has stressed the importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment of mental health problems, urging people not to ignore stress, anxiety, depression and other psychological disorders.
Talking to APP here on Friday on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the former chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at King Edward Medical University/Mayo Hospital Lahore said mental health was as important as physical health and should be given equal attention.
Referring to the theme of World Mental Health Day 2026, “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,” he said it highlighted the importance of listening to the real-life experiences of people facing mental health challenges and ensuring meaningful support and positive change.
He said the fast pace of modern life, economic and social challenges, domestic problems and other factors were contributing to rising psychological stress. However, timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, a balanced lifestyle and family support could help effectively manage most mental health problems.
Prof. Dr. Aftab Asif said persistent sadness, anxiety, significant changes in sleep or appetite, constant fatigue, loss of interest in daily activities, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating and feelings of hopelessness should not be dismissed as mere weakness or habit, as these could indicate an underlying mental health problem.
He emphasized that mental illness could affect people of any age or social background, adding that embarrassment, social pressure and fear of stigma should not prevent anyone from seeking professional help.
Highlighting the significance of the 2026 theme, he said people experiencing psychological difficulties should be heard with empathy and respect. Listening without judgment could help reduce stigma, encourage timely treatment and improve understanding and support for those affected, he added.
He urged parents to take sudden and significant changes in the behaviour of children and young people seriously, listen to their concerns attentively and encourage them to share their problems instead of subjecting them to criticism or reprimand. Similarly, he said loneliness, loss of interest and withdrawal from social activities among elderly family members should not be dismissed as normal behaviour.
The psychiatrist advised people to adopt healthy daily routines, including adequate sleep, a balanced diet, regular physical activity, positive social interaction and balanced use of mobile phones and other media, to help protect their mental well-being.
He said stress was a part of life, but when it began affecting daily routines, work, education, family relationships or social activities, people should not delay consulting a mental health professional.
Prof. Dr. Aftab Asif urged society to treat people facing mental health challenges with compassion and support rather than criticism, taunts or social isolation. He said the message of “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change” should be translated into practical action by creating safe spaces where people could openly discuss their experiences and receive appropriate assistance.
He emphasized that mental health awareness should remain a continuous effort at homes, educational institutions, workplaces and across society rather than being confined to a single day, enabling people to seek timely help and contribute to a healthier, more compassionate society.
